the procrastinator

OK, so am not the best blogger. In fact, am a pretty poor version. And, maybe I will make a new year resolution to blog more. Maybe.

I wonder, does anyone else out there struggle with procrastinating? Does anyone else find herself catching up on facebook, rather than completing an assignment? Reading email rather than grading? Or some other stuff you do rather than what you oughta have been doing?

And when all is said and done, what is the cure for procrastination? Guilt ain't a cure, I feel guilty as hell and procrastinate anyway.

  1. Hey Faith,
Great post! And I mean that in not the lightest of terms considering that I am a stickler for details.

I think one thing that we really have to learn how to do is to appreciate our achievements howsoever small or large they may be.

I loved reading about defending our dissertations and am certain it will come in handy for me too. As for Nell Noddings and spirituality, suffice it to say that it is as dear to each individual as their bare nakedness. The only irony is that people tend to relate religion to spirituality and in the process confuse, intertwine and misrepresent the two with concepts meant for one or the other. Ideally, one's spirituality is (not by definition) their lack of facades, their depth and their strength and the same time their weakness. It is only when we can truely look into the eyes of the gaping hole that we can say we have walked into the arms of the devil and come back full fledged and rearing to go!

Any way, least I diagress here goes nothing into the woes of procrastinators. In my experience, I have realised that it is always much better to allow room for weakness, rather than try to stuff it up into a tiny container called "Self control" ony to have it burst out and take control of our sanities (or lack thereof!). So what I tend to do is, depending on what I am likely to use as a tool of distraction, amidst whatever "obligation, duty or requirement" I am supposed to do.. I always allow room for "weakness or idling" or what many would love to term as Procrastinating. But what takes it away from procrastination titles and descriptions is that I actually allot it time as something i have to do. I begin my "work" and look forward to those timed breaks were I can dispense with discipline. Then by the time I resume my "work" I am less inclined to be tempted. This same concept has worked well for me when I am trying to control my ever so rebellious eating urges, or cravings. I have days of the year and some months that I literally set aside to be sinfully a glutton and love it.

But hey, you know what they say one mans meat and all........ Lady, the way I see it, there is only one important thing to consider at the end of the day procrastination or not DO YOU GET THE JOB DONE!

Nice hearing (or reading)from you maam!

  2. Julian, this is such sage advise on procrastination! I love it!!! Make time for 'downtime' in the worktime, then you wont be as likely to procrastinate...neat. I am a scheduler, and when i dont follow through on my time tables, I get frustrated with myself. But these days, as long as everything, or almost everything on the 'to do list' gets done, am learning to give myself a little slack. Maybe I will just take your advise and schedule downtime so I wont feel so frustrated when I take it. Thanks for sharing!
